1

Determine your travel dates

Before purchasing, confirm the exact dates you will be using Austrian motorways. For the 10-day vignette, you choose the start date. For the 2-month vignette, you choose the start month. The annual vignette starts on 1 December.

2

Choose your vignette type

Use our selection matrix to determine which vignette type offers the best value for your trip. Consider the number of days, your vehicle type, and whether you will make multiple trips.

3

Decide: digital or sticker

If you prefer a digital vignette, purchase online via the ASFINAG website or app. If you prefer a sticker, purchase at a border crossing, petrol station, or post office. Both are equally valid.

4

Purchase the vignette

For digital: visit the ASFINAG website, enter your licence plate number, select the vignette type and start date, and complete the payment. You will receive an email confirmation. For sticker: visit any authorised retailer and purchase the appropriate vignette.

5

Attach the sticker correctly (if applicable)

If you purchased a sticker vignette, attach it to the inside of your windscreen in the lower left or lower right corner. The sticker must be clearly visible from outside and must not be placed on a removable surface. Do NOT attach it to the outside of the windscreen.

6

Verify your purchase

For digital vignettes, check your email confirmation and verify the licence plate number is correct. For sticker vignettes, ensure the sticker is firmly attached and the validity dates are clearly visible.

7

Keep your proof of purchase

Retain your email confirmation (digital) or receipt (sticker) for the duration of your trip. While not always required to show, it can help resolve any disputes.

8

Check special toll roads

Remember that the vignette does not cover all roads. Check our special toll roads list and budget for any additional tolls on your route (e.g., Brenner, Tauern, Karawanken).

Preparation Checklist

Before you travel on Austrian motorways, go through this checklist:

  • ☐ Confirmed travel dates and duration on Austrian motorways
  • ☐ Selected the correct vignette type using the selection matrix
  • ☐ Verified vehicle weight (must be under 3.5t for standard vignette)
  • ☐ Decided between digital vignette and sticker
  • ☐ Purchased vignette from authorised source
  • ☐ For digital: confirmed correct licence plate number in purchase
  • ☐ For sticker: attached correctly to inside of windscreen
  • ☐ Retained email confirmation or receipt
  • ☐ Checked route for special toll roads (Sondermaut)
  • ☐ Budgeted for any additional tolls (Brenner, Tauern, etc.)
  • ☐ Checked if rental car already includes vignette
  • ☐ Verified vignette validity period covers entire Austrian motorway use

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Placing the sticker on the outside of the windscreen (must be inside)
  • Placing the sticker on a removable sun visor or temporary surface
  • Purchasing a vignette for the wrong vehicle (vignettes are non-transferable)
  • Entering the wrong licence plate number for a digital vignette
  • Assuming the vignette covers special toll roads (it does not)
  • Forgetting that the 10-day vignette starts on the date you choose, not necessarily today
  • Purchasing a vignette for a rental car that already includes one
  • Attempting to transfer a used sticker from one vehicle to another
